RangShree :: A Social and Cultural Institution
Founded by Sri Mahendra Singh has been busy since last 20 years in
promotion of Bhojpuri Culture, Literature & Theatres through Live Plays,
Dramas and Publications - A Report by Sri Mahendra Singh on Status of
Bhojpuri Art & Theatres and Contribution of Rangshree therein. |
Today the whole Indian culture is under siege because of
the mad run towards western culture. Factors that used to influence change
in culture have changed. Earlier laureates, artists, poets, saints,
thinkers, leaders used influence the society and were active factors for any
change in the culture of the society. Be it Tulsidas from Ram Charit Manas
or Kabir from Nirgun Vani, they all influenced. As such they were known as
the guardians of the society. They knew their responsibilities, too. But
their distance from the society has increased as on date. They no more
effective in any cultural change.
Today the factors/agents of such cultural changes have changed. Out of
Literature, Art, Newspapers, Radio, Cinema and Television the most effective
and important factor of cultural change is the idiot box “television”. Now
the producers of TV programmes have taken place of the guardians of the
society sitting in the drawing & bed rooms of every house. The so-called
guardians of the society today are not guiding the young generation but
pushing them only on the same path they tend to slide. The sole objective of
these guardians is to snatch money from the masses, to take maximum out of
the viewer’s pocket. The intelligentsia has no control over whatever they
present to the viewers. The people at the helm of the affairs have the only
objective of money minting and hence there is degeneration and a cultural
pollution.
Yet there is a ray of hope. And this ray is the Folk theatres. These
theatres can still reach the masses residing in the remote rural areas of
the nation. Ours is a country of villages. The cultural pollution spread by
the media has not fully spread in the rural India. Hence Folk theatre has
still an edge over it. It is still relevant. These theatres used to be curt
in cursing the social evils. They were so popular that thousands of people
used to stand whole night to see these theatres. These plays were able to
attack scathingly on social evils. Prior to independence and till sixties
Bhojpuri theatre used to be very popular. But slowly it became less popular.
The people who were able to bear the expenses of these groups, at least on
the occasions of their marriages, started settling down in towns. The poor
villagers are unable to organize these plays and bear the expenses of such
professional theatre groups. As a result these theatre groups are getting
extinct.
Today we are forgetting our traditional values and rich culture. The young
generation is running towards western culture. Though Institutions like
National School of Drama, Sangeet Natak Academy, Sahitya Kala Parishad have
contributed enough to the development of Hindi theatre yet it is not as
popular as Marathi and Bengoli theatre. The reason is fundamental. The
people do not find their true life on the stage. Neither they establish
themselves as a character of the play nor find a dream of Hindi cinema in
it. If we analyse the causes we find that there is dearth of original Hindi
plays in Hindi theatres. The translations of western plays are mostly being
staged by these institutions. This is not a healthy sign for the development
of Hindi theatre. Hindi is very close to Bhojpuri which has a rich culture
of folk theatre, songs etc. Hindi theatre could have established its
identity quite early had it taken recourse of developing Bhojpuri theatre
simultaneously. This could have prompted publication of original Bhojpuri
plays as well.
But neither this was done nor the Bhojpuri writers, publishers and
dramatists were promoted or awarded after Padma Shree Bhikhari Thakur. The
erstwhile guardians, of illiterate rural people, like Bhikhari Thakur, are
no more there but the vendors of vulgar songs renting the air round the
clock. Under these circumstances it becomes the responsibility of all of us
to promote folk theatres, arts and artists and also discard vulgar
cassettes/CDs etc. Only this can check the irresponsible, money minters of
media from exploiting our society and polluting the vast ocean of Bhojpuri
culture.
I have following books written by myself
1) Birju Ke Biah {Marriage
of Birju}- This is a play on awareness of proper and productive use
of agricultural loans , maintaining small family norm and stop extravagance
in social & rituals.Anti dowry story is the main focus.
It is taught in 4 Universities of Bihar somewhere in BA and somewhere in
Inter. IT has been staged by Our Theatre Group more than 100 times.
Price 30/-Rs
2} Kachot- This play is based on
socio-political awareness of the downtroden against their exploitation by
the stronger and affluent section of the society. Price Rs.50/-
There are some more valuable and meaningful dramas written and staged by me
including. Lutki Baba ke Ramleela, Basmatia Chaur, Pahrua all in Bhojpuri
and Pratikshalaya in Hindi and Khuda Na Khasta in Urdu which are not
published. VIBHOR.
I am publishing one Bhojpuri magazine on Bhojpuri Theatre in the name of
VIBHOR. so far 5 issues have come out annually. The tragedy is we have
to gift these books we hardly find readers who purchase these books.
However, I have many other books but for reference and few for Sale live
Natak "Vandematram" & "Gurudev" by Suresh Kantak. I may get few more books
for sale by mid April 06
I have written some more plays and stage time and again. Here I am giving
the summery of my plays. Point is unless I am able sell which I have
published how to publish the remaining and this is true with all the writers
of Bhojpuri.
1.Lutki Baba ke Ramleela- I
haves tried to awaken the masses aginst caste & creed. Being staged at Ara
Ramna Maidan on 13th & 14th April 06
2.Basmatia Chaur- This play gives the
message of the need of strenghtening the family bond and harmony harmony
because joint families is on the verge of collapse and the elders & weakers
are left in the lurch due to the reason of Industrial Development &
Urbanization.
3.Pratikshalaya{Waiting Room}-This
play is able to give a true picture of contemporary Indian society where so
many inhuman things are happening in our day to day life. The message of
this play is to live United and peacefully.
4.Khuda Na Khasta- Khuda Na Khasta
is meaningful & powerful play of Women’s Empowerment. The play arouses the
awareness of women’s right and discourages us to stop disregard of women.
The women are also encouraged to become self dependent & economically
empowered.
5. Paharua-This play deals with prevention
and precaution of Aids. What is the reason of Aids and how it can be
controlled is the theme of the play. The dramatist has tried to provide
right information about it and showed a right path to come out from
darkness. Bihar Aids Control Board has made a tele film on this story under
my direction.
